Patching of wall and making up the leeway!

Life is full of pleasant surprises as they say! Receiving help from unexpected sources...

A certain accident left a broken, damaged drywall in my apartment. I was short on money and did not have any skills to repair it. Luckily, a handyman working for the apartment complex decided to come over after his regular work hours on request. Not only he fixed it in two visits in exchange of sweet words and spicy Indian snacks but also gave away some interesting information about other small things in apartment.

He was born in USA to Mexican immigrants. He held high regards for his mother who had worked hard to raise him. He hated traditional education and its outcome. According to him the jobs that we think as cushy and high paying were uninteresting. He thought just sitting and working around computers as a waste of life.... He compared it to an idiot box. He preferred moving about working with things and building real physical things. Coming from a family of professionals with white collared jobs and enjoying the freedom in a cubicle in front of computer or a scope, this thought was a new way of looking at life. His life stories were full of enthusiasm and he had a great deal of enjoyment in what he was doing. In passing he mentioned he wasn’t as bad in the academic education as well. He had close ties with his siblings and parents.

What I learned- We need all kind of people in life with varied interest. It’s good that there are still people who enjoy doing simple menial jobs. Thankfully there is still no robotics and automation in many areas! I am fortunate to work in health care which is fast becoming a mix of both- the automation algorithm driven industry yet it is some place where we need real people who understand the value of humanity and human touch!

Howrah Bridge

When I was a little girl, I visited Kolkata (Calcutta-back then). I kind of knew about the iconic Howrah Bridge that we had to cross to get to the city considering my curious nature, encouraging mother and precocious reading. The two main facts that I knew were that it was the longest cantilever bridges the world. A cantilever bridge is supported on only one end and the supporting end acts as an anchorage for sustaining another portion. The second fact was that it was the it the busiest balanced cantilever bridge on the planet with highest number of people traveling over it. One of my older cousin had come to pick us up from the station was very enthusiastic about telling us more about the bridge, about Kolkata in general and had assumed a role of amateur local tourist guide.   To my children,  If my memory serves me well, I will be able to tell you a story in its splendid colors possibly in a way that your grandfather (your father’s side) used to tell me when I was a child… Oh snap!
